The federation's decision to hire lobbyists to oppose the women's team's lawsuit has alienated many sponsors and fans. The women’s team followed a similar path, using social media to leverage uncomfortable exchanges in courts.
A lawsuit against the USSF caused outrage within the soccer community. It accused the federation sexism and discriminatory behavior. The backlash caused Carlos Cordeiro to resign in March 2020 as USSF president. Cordeiro was replaced by Cone as president of the USSF.
