The United States women's national team will face France in the women's world cup. Both sides are well-versed in large matches and have a solid pedigree. France has won twice and drew once in the last three meetings. France is coming off a 3-1 win over the USA earlier this year.

The USWNT walked out of the locker-room with a sense urgency. Valerie Gauvin was unable to score a header during the first half due to American goalkeeper Alyssa Neher. Shortly after, the United States equalized with a Sam Mewis goal. France is losing possession and they appear to be going into overtime.

Megan Rapinoe’s performance

Megan Rapinoe was remarkable during the US-France world cup 2019 quarterfinals. The American forward scored two goals and was present in the first match. After scoring an early goal free kick, she didn't hesitate to admit the irony.

Rapinoe scored the United States' first goal of the match in the first quarter. She added her second goal in the second half, which proved to be the difference in the match. The United States led by 1-0. France was able to score a late goal due to Wendie Renard's free kick. Rapinoe's goal was her 50th career international goal and helped the United States reach the quarterfinals of the world cup for the first time.

Becky Sauerbrunn performs

Becky Sauerbrunn, a 34-year-old defender and two-time Olympian, will co-captain the United States women's soccer team this summer in France. USA are trying to replicate their 2015 World Cup win. She played every minute during the 2015 World Cup for the USA in the central back position. She was a brilliant player when she was young and now she co-captains the team.

Although the Americans have a stronger team, they still have some fresh faces. Although Sauerbrunn made a critical mistake in the 1-0 victory over Spain, she has learned from it. After the game, Sauerbrunn acknowledged her error and was glad that her team advanced to the next round.

Megan Renard's prolific goalscoring record

Megan Renard's exemplary record as a world cup goalscorer makes her a possible contender for this year's Best FIFA Women's Player prize. Renard, 30, is France's most decorated footballer. She has won a record fourteen French League titles and seven European Cups. She also has over 100 goals for Lyon as well as 28 for the national team. Renard is a strong candidate for the award, even though she has only participated in four matches for France. France secured their spot in the tournament by Renard's first header against Austria in a UEFA Euro 2022 qualification match.

Renard also has scored in four of five World Cups in the past, which is the best record in the tournament. She is known for her excellent attacking play and prolific goalscoring. She is a formidable striker with a good right foot and is capable scoring from far away.

USA's lawsuit against United States Soccer Federation

Major criticism is being levelled at the U.S. Soccer Federation for its position in the dispute over the salaries of the women's and men's soccer teams. The federation's decision to hire lobbyists to oppose the women's team's lawsuit has alienated many sponsors and fans. The women’s team followed a similar path, using social media to leverage uncomfortable exchanges in courts.

A lawsuit against the USSF caused outrage within the soccer community. It accused the federation sexism and discriminatory behavior. The backlash caused Carlos Cordeiro to resign in March 2020 as USSF president. Cordeiro was replaced by Cone as president of the USSF. Cordeiro is still on the USSF board but is now running for president.
